Choosing
- Trip more than 10 weeks away: routine service is usually enough. Expedite only if you cannot absorb a delay.
- Trip 4–10 weeks away: expedite by mail and add 1–2 day return delivery. This is the sweet spot.
- Trip 2–4 weeks away: expedite by mail, add fast return delivery, and monitor status. If the trip moves inside 14 days, pivot to an appointment.
- Trip under 14 days: appointment, not mail. Do not rely on expedited mail here.
- Family emergency abroad: life-or-death service, handled by phone, can be same day.
The mistake that costs the most time
Expedited service speeds up a correct application. It does nothing for one that gets returned.
