How Long Does an Expedited Passport Take in 2026?

Expedited processing is currently around 2–3 weeks at the passport agency, and routine processing is around 6–8 weeks. Those numbers are the part the Department of State controls. The part most people forget is everything that happens on either side of it.
The full timeline, not just the processing window

When expediting isn't fast enough
If you have documented international travel within 14 days — or within 28 days when you also need a visa — you don't want mail expediting at all. You want an in-person urgent travel appointment at a regional passport agency. Those can produce a passport in as little as 1–3 days. Bring proof of travel: a flight itinerary, booking confirmation, or the emergency documentation.
Appointments release on a rolling basis and get taken quickly. Checking early in the morning, and being flexible about which agency you drive to, is the difference between getting one and not.
What actually causes delays
Processing time only starts when the agency accepts your application. Anything wrong sends you back to the beginning:
- A photo that fails the 2x2 standard
- The wrong form for your situation
- A photocopied birth certificate where a certified original was required
- A check written for the wrong amount or the wrong payee
- An unsigned form — or a DS-11 signed before you reached the acceptance agent
A returned application typically costs weeks, which is far more than expediting ever buys you.
How to protect your date
- Apply as early as you can, even if your trip isn't booked yet.
- Pay for expedited service and 1–2 day return delivery if your trip is inside ten weeks.
- Get your photo checked before printing it.
- Have someone verify your form against your documents before it goes in the envelope.
