How to Get a Passport Fast: Every Option, Ranked by Speed

The realistic ways to get a U.S. passport quickly — urgent travel appointments, expedited mail service, and what to do if you are traveling in days.

There are exactly four speeds available to you, and which one you can use depends almost entirely on how soon you're traveling.

1. Life-or-death emergency (fastest)

Reserved for a serious illness, injury, or death of an immediate family member abroad, with travel inside 72 hours. You call the National Passport Information Center, provide documentation from the hospital, mortuary, or funeral home, and are given an emergency appointment. Passports here can be issued the same day.

2. Urgent travel appointment (1–3 days)

For documented international travel inside 14 days — or inside 28 days if you also need to obtain a visa. You book an appointment at a regional passport agency, appear in person, and can walk out with a passport within days.

What you need:

• Proof of travel (itinerary, booked flight, or reservation)
• Your completed form, photo, ID plus a photocopy, and citizenship evidence
• Payment for the government fees

Appointments are limited. Check availability early in the day, and be willing to travel to a different agency city.

3. Expedited by mail (2–3 weeks plus shipping)

Request expedited service, pay the government expedite fee, and add 1–2 day return delivery. In practice this is roughly 3–4 weeks door to door. This is the right choice for travel four to ten weeks out.

4. Routine (6–8 weeks plus shipping)

Fine if your trip is more than three months away. Don't pay for speed you don't need.

The thing that actually makes you slow

Every one of these tracks assumes your application is correct. A rejected photo, a wrong form, a photocopy where an original was required, or a bad check will cost you more time than any speed upgrade buys you. That is the failure mode that ruins trips — not the government's queue.

A practical checklist for a fast application

1. Confirm which form you need: DS-82 (renew by mail) or DS-11 (in person).
2. Take a compliant 2x2 photo and have it checked before printing.
3. Gather originals: certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or your old passport.
4. Photocopy the front and back of your photo ID.
5. Write the check for the exact amount, payable to "U.S. Department of State".
6. Do not sign a DS-11 until you're in front of the acceptance agent.
7. Ship with tracking.
