Need a Passport in 72 Hours? Exactly What to Do
Last updated August 25, 2026 by the ExpediteGov editorial team.
A step-by-step plan for getting a U.S. passport in under three days, including urgent travel appointments, required proof of travel, and what to bring.
Short answer: If you travel within 14 days, you can get a U.S. passport in as little as 1–3 days by booking an urgent travel appointment at a passport agency or center. Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 (Monday–Friday) to request an appointment, bring proof of your travel dates, your completed form, citizenship evidence, ID, a 2x2 photo, and the fees. Mail — even expedited mail — cannot meet a 72-hour deadline.
The 72-hour plan
Hour 0 — confirm you qualify. Urgent travel appointments require international travel within 14 days, or within 4 weeks if you first need to apply for a foreign visa. Life-or-death emergencies (death, serious illness or injury of an immediate family member abroad) are handled separately and can be same-day.
Hour 1 — book the appointment. Appointments are released daily and go quickly. Call 1-877-487-2778 and select the urgent travel option. Be ready with your travel dates, destination and the agency you can physically reach.
Hour 2 — get proof of travel. You must show it. Accept none of these as optional:
- A booked flight itinerary or ticket with your name and dates
- A cruise or tour booking
- For visa cases, the appointment or visa requirement documentation
Hour 3 — get the photo right. 2x2 inches, taken in the last 6 months, plain white background, neutral expression, no glasses. A non-compliant photo is the most common on-site delay.
Hours 4–24 — assemble the packet.
- Renewal by mail eligible? It does not matter here — in-person urgent cases usually use DS-82 or DS-11 depending on your history. Bring both your old book (if you have one) and citizenship evidence.
- First passport, lost, stolen or damaged: Form DS-11 plus original certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate, plus a photo ID and a photocopy of it.
- Lost or stolen: add Form DS-64.
- Fees: application fee, $60 expedite fee, and the $35 execution fee if applying on DS-11. Bring a check or money order — agencies do not take cash for everything, and card acceptance varies.
Day 2–3 — attend and collect. Many agencies print same day or next day; some ship overnight. Do not book non-refundable connecting travel until the passport is in your hand.
If you cannot reach an agency
There are only a limited number of passport agencies and centers nationwide. If none is reachable, your fastest remaining route is expedited service by mail with 1–2 day return delivery — realistically 2–3 weeks plus shipping. In that case, change the trip date rather than gamble.
