9 Passport Photo Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

The specific photo errors that cause U.S. passport applications to be returned — and exactly how to take a compliant 2x2 photo at home.

The specification, in one place

  • 2 x 2 inches, printed in color
  • Head 1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to crown
  • Taken within the last 6 months
  • Plain white or off-white background, evenly lit
  • Full face, front view, eyes open
  • Neutral expression or a natural closed-mouth smile
  • Normal clothing, nothing resembling a uniform
  • No eyeglasses
  • Head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, with a signed statement, face fully visible

The nine failures we see most

  1. A shadow behind the head. Standing too close to the wall. Step 18 inches forward.
  2. A background that isn't white. Cream, grey, or a textured wall all read as non-compliant.
  3. An arm's-length selfie. Lens distortion at close range changes your facial proportions.
  4. Glasses. Not permitted since 2016, even thin frames pushed down the nose.
  5. A big smile. Teeth showing or squinted eyes will usually fail.
  6. Hair over the eyes or eyebrows. Pin it back.
  7. Filters or beauty mode. Any retouching is a rejection, including automatic phone smoothing.
  8. A cropped group photo. Lighting and angle almost never survive the crop.
  9. A hand supporting an infant. For babies, lay the child on a plain white sheet and shoot from directly overhead — no arms, no pacifier, no car seat in frame.

How to take one that passes

Stand about 18 inches in front of a plain white wall. Face a window or a lamp so the light comes from in front of you, not above or behind. Have someone hold the camera roughly four feet away at eye level. Square your shoulders to the camera, keep your head level, and hold a neutral expression.
