Passport Renewal by Mail: The Complete Timeline
Last updated August 25, 2026 by the ExpediteGov editorial team.
What happens week by week when you renew a U.S. passport on Form DS-82, from mailing day to delivery, plus how to shorten each stage.
Short answer: A routine DS-82 renewal by mail takes about 6–8 weeks of government processing plus 1–2 weeks of mailing in each direction, so plan on 8–11 weeks door to door. Expedited renewal is about 2–3 weeks of processing, and with 1–2 day return delivery the realistic door-to-door total is 3–5 weeks.
Week by week
| Stage | Routine | Expedited |
|---|---|---|
| You mail the packet | Day 0 | Day 0 |
| Received and logged at a processing center | 3–10 days | 3–10 days |
| In process (adjudication and printing) | 6–8 weeks | 2–3 weeks |
| Shipped to you | +3–10 days standard, 1–2 days if paid | +1–2 days if paid |
| Old passport returned separately | Usually within 4 weeks of the new one | Same |
Your status becomes trackable online only after the application is logged — silence in the first week or two is normal, not a problem.
Who can renew by mail
All five must be true of your most recent passport:
- It is undamaged and you can submit it.
- It was issued when you were 16 or older.
- It was issued within the last 15 years.
- It is in your current name, or you include a certified name-change document.
- It is a full-validity book (or card) issued by the United States.
If any fails, you apply in person on Form DS-11 instead.
What goes in the envelope
- Completed, signed Form DS-82
- Your most recent passport book (and card, if renewing both)
- One 2x2 inch color photo taken within the last 6 months
- A check or money order for the exact fee, payable to "U.S. Department of State"
- Name-change documentation, if applicable
Do not send cash. Do not staple the photo anywhere except where the form directs. Use a trackable mailing service.
How to shorten the timeline
- Pay the $60 expedite fee — the biggest single reduction.
- Pay $21.36 for 1–2 day return delivery.
- Mail early in the week to avoid weekend transit.
- Get the photo checked before mailing. Photo problems are the leading cause of returned renewals.
Common reasons a renewal is returned
Wrong or old form version, unsigned form, photo with glasses or a shadowed background, a check for the wrong amount, missing name-change document, and sending a passport that was issued more than 15 years ago (which makes you ineligible for DS-82).
ExpediteGov prepares your DS-82 packet, reviews the photo, calculates the exact fee, and tells you where to mail it. We are a private concierge service and are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of State. Government forms are free at travel.state.gov.
